How to Care for Your Birth Flower Ring
An adjustable birth flower ring is designed to be worn and loved every day — and with a little care, it will keep its shine and its perfect fit for years. Here's how to care for your Stellera & Co. birth flower ring, including how to adjust it safely without weakening the band.
Our birth flower rings are made to order on a nickel-free 925 sterling silver base, in polished silver, 14K gold, and rose gold finishes. This guide is part of our jewelry metals & care series.
How to adjust your ring (the right way)
The open, wrap-style band is what makes these rings one-size-fits-most — but it should be adjusted gently and rarely, not resized back and forth constantly, which can weaken any metal over time. To resize:
- To make it smaller: gently press the two ends closer together with your fingers, easing them evenly rather than forcing one side.
- To make it larger: carefully ease the ends apart the same way.
- Adjust off the finger, holding the band (not the flower), and make small movements. Find your fit once and then leave it.
Everyday care
- Take it off for water and chemicals: remove your ring before showering, swimming, washing dishes, and applying lotion or perfume. Moisture and chemicals dull the finish over time.
- Take it off for hands-on tasks: gardening, cleaning, and the gym can bend a delicate adjustable band or scratch the finish.
- Clean gently: wipe with a soft cloth. For sterling silver, a jewelry polishing cloth restores shine; for gold and rose gold finishes, avoid abrasive cloths and harsh dips — a soft wipe is all they need.
- Store it dry: keep it in a soft pouch, away from humidity and other pieces that could scratch it.
Will it tarnish?
The sterling silver base can tarnish naturally over time, like all silver — but it cleans up easily and wearing it regularly helps keep it bright. For the full story, see our guide on whether sterling silver tarnishes.
Keeping the birthstone bright
The birthstone accent stays sparkling with the same simple care: keep it dry, avoid lotions and perfumes, and wipe gently. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners and harsh chemicals, which can loosen or dull set stones.
Frequently asked questions
How do I resize my adjustable birth flower ring?
Gently press the open ends together to make it smaller, or ease them apart to make it larger — off the finger, holding the band rather than the flower. Adjust it once to your fit and avoid repeated resizing.
Can I shower or swim with my ring?
It's best not to. Water — especially chlorinated or salt water — and soaps can dull the finish over time. Take it off first.
Will the gold finish wear off?
With gentle care it lasts a long time. Keep the ring dry, avoid abrasives and harsh dips, and wipe with a soft cloth. Learn more in our gold vermeil vs gold plated guide.
Is the ring hypoallergenic?
Yes — the 925 sterling silver base is nickel-free and hypoallergenic, comfortable for everyday wear.
